At Butterball, we are committed to producing healthy, high-quality turkeys in a responsible way.

Simply, animal care and well-being are central to who we are as a company, and we are committed to maintaining the health and well-being of our turkeys. Butterball adheres to high standards of animal care and we're engaged in a stringent, zero-tolerance policy against any form of animal mistreatment.

Butterball follows all animal care guidelines set by American Humane™ and the National Turkey Federation, and continually assesses our policies, procedures, and new and emerging technologies.

American Humane Certification

The American Humane Certified program, a program offered by American Humane, is the nation’s first independent, third-party humane certification program for farm animals. Through rigorous inspections and examinations, American Humane provides third-party, independent verification that certified producers’ care and handling of farm animals meet or exceed American Humane’s peer-reviewed, science-based animal welfare standards.

Butterball voluntarily seeks and maintains American Humane Certified™ status through American Humane via regular audits, which are periodically unannounced.

Position on Antibiotics

Our philosophy is simple: To produce the high-quality products you expect from us, it is vital that our turkeys stay healthy. Our commitment to their health and well-being starts at the farm.

All Butterball turkeys are raised hormone- and steroid-free in accordance with U.S. Department of Agriculture requirements. To maintain the health of our turkeys, we will administer antibiotics only as needed, under licensed veterinarian’s guidance, to ensure they live healthy lives. We are committed to the responsible use of antibiotics. In 2015, we refined our policy on antibiotic use, and eliminated use of any labeled as growth promotants. We intend to further reduce the use of antibiotics in the coming years.
